Capture of the full impacts of The Earthshot Prize Award, year on year since their inception.

The Earthshot Prize is a global environmental initiative and charity launched by Prince William in 2020 to drive urgent action and innovative solutions to repair and protect the planet. Each year, an Awards show presents 5 winning companies with a £1 million prize fund. “Earthshot Week” surrounds the awards ceremony and incorporates numerous events that take place across the host city.

Hosted in a different country each year, The Earthshot Prize Awards and Earthshot Week investigates and instructs a new supply chain each year. They also have to adapt to the challenges and opportunities faced in each different location. Furthermore, the number and scale of the events requires comprehensive stakeholder engagement and data capture across the multi-event supply chain. This is where we come in.

Role: Sustainability Partner

Objective: To capture and report on the carbon impact of the Awards Ceremony and surroudning Earthshot Week events, as well as providing expert advice for sustainable decision making in operations.

Challenge: Complex, multi-stakeholder, and multi-venue event operations with a need to capture comprehensive and detailed data to meet several different reporting requirements (annual emissions reporting, project-based events emissions with yearly comparison, albert certification).

KEY ACTIONS:

Stakeholder Engagement and Training

  • Mapped all relevant stakeholders involved in the event and delineated the boundaries of operation and financial control for the reporting of the charity.

  • Built rapport with stakeholders and trained them in basic event sustainability concepts. Within this, we explained the sustainability ambitions of the charity and of the event.

Data collection and analysis

  • Worked with all stakeholders to understand their individual data collection requirements and key reportable metrics.

  • Devised bespoke data collection templates for the different stakeholder groups.

  • Analysis of all data from all stakeholders to provide a thorough capture of the Earthshot Activities.

Reporting and Support

  • Throughout the project we were a sounding board for all partners on certain sustainability topics.

  • We supported the different teams with their own sustainability responsibilities, for example, we helped production teams with their albert reporting.

  • All event impact areas across all events were reported in alignment with TEP’s internal carbon reporting and recommendations were made on how to improve the events in future years

  • For the first time in 2024, we captured social impacts metrics which were reported with our Carbon and Impact Report for the 2024 Event.

  • We have provided continuous support in developing TEP’s carbon compensation strategy, developing and presenting several available routes tailored to their operations that focused on transparency, impact, and the Earthshot Prize ecosystem.

ALL IN ALL:

  • Education of local supply chain: worked with the local supply chain to aid them in their own understanding of carbon reporting for events and trained them in basic event sustainability concepts to leave a positive legacy.

  • Holistic Picture of Impact: With our input, The Earthshot Prize Award has recorded and reported a holistic picture of its impact for the past 4 years, aiding internal teams and suppliers to make more informed decisions and sustainable choice year on year.

"We have been working with Hope Solutions for several years to track the carbon footprint of our annual flagship event – the Earthshot Prize Awards ceremony. Each year it’s been in a different country, and each year it’s got larger which presents new challenges with tracking and reporting.

Hope Solutions have been a really collaborative partner throughout, helping us to engage stakeholders, run workshops, gather data, analyse it and create output reports. They have a wealth of experience in the team, and an amazing attention to detail which ensures we can be really confident in the numbers. They often go beyond this, suggesting new ways we can reduce our footprint and connecting us with other potential partners that can help. Their support has been invaluable and they have acted like an extension to my small team, but I am sure they would add just as much value with any organisation big or small." Stephen Lavery, The Earthshot Prize.
